EDUCATING ON ABOLISING CHILD MARRIAGE

Sarathi Jhalak is constantly educating rural Bengaluru communities on Child Marriage eradication with the UNICEF, New Delhi. In this regard, Sarathi Jhalak continuously produces programmes based on testimonials.

During 2018-2020, Women and Child Welfare Department Government of Karnataka supported this initiative from Sarathi Jhalak.

Delivery mode: Sarathi involved Anganavaadi workers, legal experts, schools and teachers, Education Department officials, Grama Panchayath members etc in this Out Reach Program. VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS, it was the response, enthusiasm, and involvement by the communities when the radio was started in 2012.
Anganavaadi workers were our very first guests, experts and health tips providers, cab and truck drivers were our reporters, correspondents were nearby students and other community members, teachers were our Well being experts, elderly members in the communities were our Philosophers, local singers, writers were our award winning artists ….

Totally, Sarathi Jhalak opened a new wave in villages. Slowly people started using our radio even for announcing for missing children and animals, school news and other cultural activities, voluntarily started engaging with the radio. Slowly, members and other activists in the villages started new initiatives like Jala Sambhrama – A Save Water initiative, Legal literacy campaign with the coordination of Karnataka Legal Aid Board, special classes for primary kids etc. Now, students from various displine and Institutions like Government First Grade Colleges of Yalahanka, KR Puram and a few private colleges Dayananda Sagar Group of Institutions, SFS, Presidency etc students etc come to the studio for their internship. We encourage students to share and exhibit their knowledge and talent which makes them more effective communicators.

Community Radio preamble says that Community Radio is for the people, by and to the people. Literally Sarathi Jhalak, the first woman owned Radio Karnataka was Voice of Hoskote and Malur.

Its impact was noticeable, as we had a number of queries and positive responses from our listeners.

COVID-19 EDUCATION AND INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

“Madam, what is this Corona? all news channels are showing about this and talking about China is full of Corona virus. I am unable to understand the word, though I follow the story….”

This was the very first question from our program manager,in January 2020. He was asked to locate suitable resource persons and do a program to understand the word *Corona*.

Bengaluru Rural District Health Officer, Dr Dharmendra, spoke about the so-celled “Wuhan virus” in the second week of February, 2020. It was a simple program on this new virus. This talk show helped listeners understand the virus’s salient features, its transmission mechanisms, its differences from H1N1, Dengue etc.

It was the first programme to actually disseminate information rather than cite statistics on the number of cases, hospital facilities and stayed away from negativity to deliver information to audience that most needs it.
